Things we take for granted

Food.

Yep, food is something we take for granted. Believe it or not.

Every one of our orphans previously lived on a diet of flour and weeds for every meal. Literally. Flour and water mixed together was fed to them for breakfast, and corn flour boiled with water to make a paste with some cooked leaves known as Sukuma Wiki here was served for lunch and dinner. Occasionally they ate beans and rice on the weekends, and sometimes they didn't eat at all.

Here at A Future and a Hope, we serve full meals every day. They eat something new for every meal. They eat exactly what we eat because we live as a family! Lasagne with salad and fresh bread, or grilled pork chops with mashed potatoes and broccoli are typical evening meals. The girls have changed so much. No longer do they frown all day, and at meal time every bite is taken with smiles and a sparkle in the eye. It's as if they can't believe they get to eat meat and really tasty, good food for every meal. You can see the sheer ecstasy on their faces with every bite.

Yesterday I decided to make them Ice Cream floats, and after one bite, the girls' eyes nearly popped out of their heads! "Ni tamu, sindio?" I kept hearing them say to each other after each spoonful. In English:  "It's sweet, isn't it?"

I asked them if they've ever eaten Ice Cream before and all of them said 'no.' It was their first time to eat Ice Cream, EVER! I was honored to bring them that experience.
