Every now and then I like to post some basic information about us and our project. It helps new readers get to know us better, and refreshes the memories of those of you who have been around for awhile.
My name is Johnny Brooks, together with my wife Kate and four biological children (Andrew, Makena, Butterfly, and Emma,) we live in Nakuru, Kenya. We are Americans by birth, but have embraced Kenya as our home. We have been here in Kenya since January of 2005. Our youngest child, Emma, was born here in Nakuru.
Nakuru is the fourth largest city/town in Kenya, and capital of the Rift Valley Province. English is widely spoken as is Swahili. Generally speaking most people also speak a third language, which would be their mother tongue, or tribal language. I, being terrible with languages, have not mastered Swahili, though my wife and children are all fluent in it. In fact our youngest, Emma (2 years of age,) speaks more Swahili than English. Which admittedly does make communication a bit of a challenge. Though she has caught on that dear old dad just doesn't have the mental capacity to learn two languages, so she is learning English. Actually, she is cute to watch as she struggles to put the English words together for me.
Kate home schools our children using a variety of curriculums. She seems to really love teaching them. Personally I don't have the patience required to teach children, but Kate is absolutely brilliant at it.
Well that is an introduction to our family. I could go on and on for page after page, but I doubt you would keep on reading.
Johnny Brooks, who feels blessed to have such a great family. Sorry for the lack of a family picture, but Emma and Butterfly both have colds, which makes taking a decent photo difficult.
