“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27
Lately, my children and I have been working on a bad habit that we all have- interrupting. I’ve been trying to teach them to listen first, before they start talking, to see if someone is already talking first. Well…I‘ll give you an update in a month or two. I also began to realize how much I really need to learn to listen with my spiritual ears on all the little things on a daily basis. I have friends that can hear God as clearly and specifically as Moses did. I must admit- I’m not there. But I want to be. I used to think that maybe that kind of thing was only for a specific few “chosen” or
“called”. Now I know that we are all chosen and called. According to my bible, we can and should all hear and follow God. I mean, sure, I can hear Him through His Word, and what He is saying to me about my heart and spiritual matters: but the day to day decision stuff? Not really. I had been basing these beliefs on my past experiences- rather than what the Word said. You know what I mean? We ask God when it comes to some major decision- like say, to buy a house or something,
and when we hear nothing-we let the devil beat us up about it, and it forms into our beliefs. Could it be that we simply don’t know how to listen? Or perhaps there is too much noise and distractions in our hearts and lives. (You know, like when the TV is going, the baby is crying, and all your kids and your husband too, is trying to talk to you at once?) I have been meditating on Proverbs 3:5-6, that says, “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, In all your ways acknowledge him, and He shall direct your paths.” Maybe Jesus really meant it when He said, ”Apart from Me, you can do nothing.” Maybe, if we start being faithful in the little things, (seeking, listening, and obeying in all the little things), then we will know and recognize His voice in the big things too.
