Day 19

Back here on The Shire we grilled some homegrown pork, played Lord of the Rings Risk, and watched television. It was a great day.

Way over in California Makena got some more hairs cut:

They met a number of people at Bob's:

I am a little fuzzy on the timing but they might have traveled to Fresno on Day 19, or it could have been early on Day 20. Either way, they are with the Howards now.

Day 18

Kate made sourdough bread with her hosts in California. She did it wearing SpongeBob SquarePants pajamas.

Starlette encountered a vacuum cleaner for the first time. We actually own one, but after moving off grid we have never used it.

Day 17

On the seventeenth day of Kate's trip, we back here on the home front buried a friend and neighbor. She died the day Kate, Makena, and Starlette left for the airport in Nairobi. Fortunately, Kate was able to see her husband and offer comfort and get comfort. The service went well, I offered a prayer and prayed at the separate burial. She will be missed.

Meanwhile, Kate visited a horse therapy program called Project R.I.D.E. and was blown away by their facilities.

Days 14 to 16

I got behind on blogging. Too busy managing these children on my own. I did have the bright idea of cooking a larger amount of chili, so we would have leftovers. Worked great, though chili three meals in a row somehow lessens the magic of a bowl of chili.

I also had to pay a school fee for B.T. Kenya supposedly has free primary and secondary education, but it is not true. Schools will send you home over the smallest fee and then complain about the number of days you have missed school.

Otherwise, life goes on here on The Shire.

Kate, Makena, and Starlette are now in California. We did a video call just before they boarded their flight from Houston to Sacremento. Starlette was excited about another flight. I think Kate and Makena are excited about their California visit.

Now I see one of the reasons I got behind on the blogging, nothing much to say. Let me end with a picture from California:

Day 13

I am getting a bit fuzzy on some of the specifics of what day some things have happened with the trio in the U.S., but nonetheless, these things have happened:

Makena got a haircut:

Kate is having fun meeting Facebook friends in real life:

Kate is asking if she should cut her hair. Personally, I like it long, but then it is not my hair...

Day 12

You do not actually have to see Kate in person to contribute. You can give other ways as well:

You can use Paypal. Send to [email protected]

You can write a check out to A Future and a Hope, and mail it to:

Day 11

For the eleventh day of Kate's absence, I thought it would be good to remind you of the wishlist. We do not visit the U.S. that often so bringing back a few items is high on the priority list. Also feel free to be creative and contribute things not on the list, but consider that Kate has to be able to pack it and bring it back with her. Also, let me know when you purchase something so it can be crossed off the list.

Here we go:

Day 10

The tenth day finds me (Johnny) tired. Not because of the workload, cause actually that is lessened with the absence of three people. No, it is the constant responsibility. Never being able to relax, especially in the evening, and do nothing. You see normally Kate and I trade off the cooking job. Somedays we cook together, and sometimes one of us does the whole meal. That means the other can just chill. I am not even sure why having to prepare food for these people is tiresome, but it is. Why can't we live somewhere with delivery?

Speaking of food I am in the mood for deviled eggs. Wonder if that can be a complete meal tonight?

Day 9

On this the eighth ninth (OMG I am already losing track of the days) day of Kate's great U.K./American tour she went to visit a horse therapy program somewhere near Beaumont, Texas. I actually have not yet spoken to her so I do not have details, but I am sure it went well. Visiting therapy centers while in the U.S. is one of Kate's goals. She is looking for ideas, methods, tack, and connections to bring back here to The Shire and the children we work with.

Meanwhile, our heroes back home continue life on The Shire. Emma and `Eowyn spent the night in Soysambu with friends and Butterfly and I enjoyed the peace and quiet. In fact we took the time to watch Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan after dinner. Possibly my favorite Trek movie. Butterfly was completely surprised by the ending.

"I have been and always shall be your friend."

Day 8

Kate had a visit to the dentist on her trip's eighth day. She is enjoying spending time with Andrew, who moved back to the U.S. several months ago. Starlette is also enjoying hanging out with her big brother:

Kate is enjoying the "little" things like hair dryers:

Tomorrow, or today as I write this, ahh this whole time difference things is really confusing me. I got in trouble for calling Kate yesterday at 6 a.m. Texas time. All I wanted to do was show Starlette all the stuff I got at the supermarket. Anyway, I woke her up and got a mini-lecture about doing the math. Tomorrow Kate will be visiting a horse therapy program near Beaumont, Texas.

On the home front line continues on as always.
